SELF-SOOTHING - THEY NEED THEIR HANDS UNCOVERED

You may have noticed on your baby's scan photos that her hands were often in her mouth. You may even have been disappointed that you couldn't get a clear picture of her little face at your 4D scan because her hand was in the way.

You can keep your baby's nails trimmed to prevent scratches if you are scared of them hurting themselves.

No she was not being stubborn or shy however, she was self-soothing. Babies in the womb suck on their hands and thumb to soothe themselves. After they are born they continue to do so.

That is why it is important not to cover your newborn's hands with mittens, as they need their hands to soothe themselves just like they did inside the whom.

The world is a big and scary place for them, they will need to soothe themselves. An accidental scratch on the cheek from their nails will heel quickly and is much better than being new to the world and suddenly you cannot use your hands like you were used to.

I find it a very difficult task keeping those fast growing finger nails trimmed. The little hand keeps moving and I am so scared of nicking her flesh with the cutters. I actually find it best to try and trim my girl's nails while she is breastfeeding, as then she is practically incapacitated by the breastmilk.
